Demographic change discussions in Pakistan advanced at Islamabad meeting with the ministry, UNFPA and Population Council on population sustainability.

On 29 September 2025 the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives convened a stakeholders meeting at the Marriott Hotel Islamabad in collaboration with UNFPA and the Population Council to advance discussions on demographic change in Pakistan. The session built on the findings of the Pakistan @2050: Demographic Change, Future Projections, and Development Opportunities report and aimed to move dialogue toward practical policy responses.

The meeting brought together development partners, non-governmental organisations and civil society organisations to deliberate on the development implications of Pakistan’s demographic transition. Participants examined how demographic change will shape service delivery, labour markets and long-term planning across provinces while stressing the need for coordinated national strategies.

Dr Sabina Durrani and Mr Kazim Salman joined the discussions and outlined priorities for sustaining Pakistan’s growing population. They highlighted the importance of data-driven planning, investments in health and education, and partnerships with international agencies to ensure sustainable outcomes amid shifting age structures.

Attendees emphasised that addressing demographic change requires immediate policy attention and collaborative implementation. The meeting in Islamabad sought to translate the report’s projections into actionable steps, reinforcing the role of government, donors and civil society in shaping Pakistan’s demographic future.
