Al Farabi rehabilitation upgrades boost physiotherapy, speech and prosthetics at Islamabad centre as Federal Secretary reviews new therapies and EKKO device

Recent Al Farabi rehabilitation upgrades at the Special Education Centre in G-8/4 Islamabad were reviewed during a visit by Federal Secretary, Ministry of Federal Education & Professional Training, Mr. Nadeem Mahbub. The inspection focused on the effectiveness of newly enhanced therapy units and the Centre’s overall approach to inclusive learning and holistic rehabilitation.

Under directions from the Secretary, the Directorate General of Special Education has overseen improvements aimed at strengthening services for enrolled children. The Centre’s physiotherapy, music therapy, speech therapy and play therapy units have been upgraded to provide more integrated and child-centred support.

A notable element of the upgrades is the introduction of EKKO, a therapeutic device developed by EME-NUST and acquired through a CSR initiative. EKKO is being used to support speech and cognitive therapy for children with cerebral palsy and autism, complementing traditional therapies and expanding rehabilitation options available at the centre.

The upgraded Prosthetics Lab and the addition of smart screens are enabling more personalised interventions and digital learning opportunities for children with physical disabilities. These enhancements reflect a broader push to combine assistive technology with hands-on therapy for better rehabilitation outcomes.

The Secretary praised the work of the Directorate General of Special Education and commended the Directorate General for Special Education (DG Spl Edu) for persistent efforts to improve the institute. Enrollment campaigns under the Directorate continue to expand outreach, reinforcing MoFEPT’s commitment to making special children educated, empowered and self-reliant through sustained Al Farabi rehabilitation efforts.
