MNA Farhan Chishti Reaffirms Full Support for Foreign Medical Graduates; Dr. Rafey Sher Welcomes Parliamentary Backing

Islamabad: Member of the National Assembly Farhan Chishti has once again reaffirmed his full support for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) in Pakistan, pledging to raise their concerns in the upcoming National Assembly session. Speaking after a detailed follow-up meeting with Dr. Rafey Sher, MNA Chishti stated that the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has treated foreign-qualified doctors unfairly and must ensure they receive due recognition for their qualifications and contributions.

MNA Chishti emphasized that FMGs represent a vital segment of Pakistan’s medical talent, and their exclusion due to unclear and inconsistent PMDC policies is a serious injustice. He assured that he will actively advocate for the rights of FMGs during the parliamentary proceedings and work to bring clarity and reform to the PMDC framework. His renewed support has reinvigorated the FMG community, which has long sought a transparent and fair licensing process.

Political momentum around the FMG issue continues to build, as the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has already expressed its backing for the graduates in both the Senate and National Assembly. With MQM lawmakers, including MNA Farhan Chishti, now joining the cause, parliamentary consensus is growing for immediate reforms to address the long-standing grievances of FMGs.

Dr. Rafey Sher, representing the Foreign Medical Graduates community, welcomed MNA Chishti’s stance, describing it as a pivotal step in building a unified parliamentary front for resolving the issue once and for all. He appreciated MNA Chishti’s commitment to stand with FMGs “at a crucial juncture when many young doctors feel abandoned by the system.”

Dr. Sher strongly criticized the PMDC for its continued silence and lack of engagement with stakeholders. He revealed that despite multiple visits and written requests, the Council has neither agreed to a formal meeting nor issued a clear explanation regarding its new policy framework. “This ongoing lack of communication is creating confusion, uncertainty, and despair among foreign-trained doctors,” he said.

He reiterated that FMGs, who have obtained rigorous medical training abroad, deserve fair evaluation, equal opportunities, and inclusion within Pakistan’s healthcare system. “We urge PMDC to engage transparently with stakeholders, consult the relevant institutions, and finalize a policy that is just and consistent,” Dr. Rafey Sher added.

The FMG community expressed optimism that with growing support across political parties, parliamentary pressure will soon translate into meaningful action, ensuring that thousands of highly trained young doctors can contribute to Pakistan’s healthcare system rather than remain sidelined due to bureaucratic hurdles.
