The underpass near the cricket stadium on Murree Road in Shamsabad is overflowing with foul water and accumulated garbage, forcing daily commuters to climb over bricks and stones to get past a waterlogged passage. The Shamsabad underpass has become a health and safety hazard, with stagnant sewage and rubbish blocking the route for schoolchildren, women and elderly residents.
RWMC and WASA have been accused of criminal negligence as the problem persists despite repeated complaints. Zahir Ahmad Awan, who visited the site, said masses of students and residents endure extreme hardship every day and that the filthy condition compels many to cross Murree Road in dangerously risky ways, contributing to frequent accidents and traffic disruptions.
Residents say no department acts promptly unless complaints are officially filed or a situation goes viral on social media. They are urging the Chief Minister of Punjab to suspend irresponsible officers immediately and to initiate strict accountability, while placing honest and capable officials in charge across relevant departments to address the sanitation emergency at the Shamsabad underpass.
Local figures including former candidate Raja Anser Abbasi and Haji Nasir Bhatti accompanied the inspection and echoed calls for swift cleanup and restoration of safe pedestrian access. Citizens demand an urgent response to clear the sewage, remove accumulated waste and restore normal traffic and pedestrian safety along Murree Road.
