NUMS oversees the National Registration Examination to ensure transparency and patient safety; learn about result rules, passing marks, and re-totaling options.

The National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS) in Rawalpindi administers the National Registration Examination, overseeing paper setting, examination conduct, evaluation and declaration of final results to maintain credibility, integrity and patient safety.

The NRE is held in two steps at least twice a year in line with approved standards, structure and syllabus, all of which are available on the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council website. The examination follows a curriculum equivalent to Pakistan’s MBBS and BDS programmes, and candidates are encouraged to submit any complaints or concerns through the designated online portal.

NUMS conducts the National Registration Examination exclusively and independently manages all components of the process, while PMDC serves as the national regulatory authority rather than participating in paper development, examination conduct or result compilation. This separation of roles is intended to strengthen transparency and accountability in assessment procedures.

The policy governing NRE results is clearly defined and results are declared in a timely manner. The most recent NRE Step I results have been published on the PMDC website and detailed marks are accessible through PMDC’s official online portal. The passing criterion is set at 60 percent and there is no negative marking. PMDC also offers candidates the option to apply for re-totaling; for the NRE held in December 2025, only two candidates submitted re-totaling requests.

PMDC reaffirmed that no discrimination occurred at any stage and described the examination procedures as robust and aligned with national and international best practices. The council rejected allegations of opacity as baseless and reiterated that the National Registration Examination for Foreign Medical Graduates is a mandatory requirement under an Act of Parliament aimed at ensuring standardisation, transparency and quality in medical and dental education and professional practice in Pakistan.
