The Shanghai Cooperation Organization has expressed serious concern over recent tragic events in the Islamic Republic of Iran that resulted in casualties among civilians and law enforcement agencies and caused destruction to civilian infrastructure.
In a statement dated January 16, 2026, the SCO offered deep condolences to the people and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The SCO statement highlights that unilateral sanctions have had a significant negative impact on economic stability, worsened living conditions for ordinary people and objectively limited the government’s ability to implement measures for socio-economic development.
The SCO opposes interference in the internal affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran and reaffirms adherence to the principles of respecting sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of states, as well as the non-use of force or threat of force in international relations. The organisation calls for a peaceful settlement of the situation through political and diplomatic measures.
For Pakistan and other regional neighbours, the SCO statement underscores the importance of stability and diplomatic engagement to address humanitarian and economic consequences. The emphasis on dialogue and non-interference reflects a regional preference for resolving crises through peaceful, political channels rather than escalation.
