Forest Development reviews Khyber Pakhtunkhwa operations and orders strengthened monitoring of timber depots and fallen trees to boost climate resilience.

A high-level meeting chaired by Secretary for Climate Change, Forests, Environment and Wildlife Junaid Khan reviewed the performance and future strategy of the Forest Development Corporation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The session focused on administrative arrangements, timber depot operations and urgent measures to manage woodfall caused by extreme weather and natural disasters.

Managing Director Ahmed Zaib provided a detailed briefing on the Corporation’s activities across the province, including timber depots, wood storage practices, and the systems for delivery and administration. He highlighted that several trees have been uprooted or fallen in forests due to climate change, heavy rains and strong winds, creating both a resource management challenge and a potential risk for illegal exploitation.

Secretary Junaid Khan stressed that in the era of climate change it is essential to protect forest assets and ensure transparent management. He directed that the monitoring section be activated and strengthened to provide comprehensive oversight of timber depots, with particular attention to wood from trees felled by climatic impacts. The aim is to prevent resource loss and curb unlawful activities while maintaining clear accountability.

Officials were informed that a comprehensive proposal outlining reform measures, sustainable strategies and an implementation plan for the Forest Development Corporation will be presented to the provincial cabinet. Junaid Khan emphasised that any cabinet decisions will be implemented faithfully and transparently, and that the Corporation must play a central role in responsible use and conservation of forest resources in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

During the meeting the wider value of forests was underscored: they are vital for environmental balance, climate stability, biodiversity and the wellbeing of future generations. The commitment was reiterated to make the Forest Development Corporation more active and effective through principles of transparency, accountability and sustainable development so that the province’s woodlands remain protected for present and coming generations.
