Pakistan reaffirms Human Rights commitment at UNHRC and urges action on Afghanistan, Kashmir, Palestine and rising religious intolerance.

At the 61st Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Pakistan underlined its continued dedication to the promotion and protection of Human Rights, with the Secretary Ministry of Human Rights, Mr. Abdul Khalique Shaikh, leading the delegation and speaking on behalf of the country.

The Secretary stressed that Human Rights are not a luxury confined to peaceful times but must be defended amid uncertainty, conflict and global challenges. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s constructive engagement as an elected member of the Human Rights Council and called for sustained multilateral cooperation to uphold international norms.

Expressing grave concern over an aggravated regional and global rights landscape, the delegation pointed to persistent violations and the suppression of fundamental freedoms in Afghanistan, Indian-held Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine. Pakistan highlighted the urgent need for diplomatic and humanitarian responses to prevent further erosion of rights.

On the situation in Afghanistan, the Secretary warned against any misuse of religion to justify restrictions on women’s freedoms and drew attention to the acute plight of women and girls who face shrinking space for education, work and civic participation. He urged the international community to protect their rights as a matter of urgency.

The delegation reiterated that the principle of self-determination cannot be compromised and observed that the people of Jammu and Kashmir continue to be denied inalienable rights as enshrined in the UN Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions. Pakistan called for dialogue and adherence to international law to address long-standing grievances.

Turning to Palestine, the Secretary drew attention to the worsening humanitarian situation, warning that continuing violence and impunity threaten regional stability and undermine prospects for a durable peace. He urged immediate measures to protect civilians and ensure accountability for abuses.

Pakistan also raised alarm at rising religious intolerance in political discourse and the growing trend of Islamophobia, calling on states and international bodies to intensify efforts to combat hatred, discrimination and entrenched inequalities within and among societies.

Throughout his statement, the Secretary emphasised Pakistan’s commitment to advancing dialogue, reinforcing multilateral mechanisms and promoting universal respect for Human Rights in line with the purposes of the United Nations Charter, while continuing constructive engagement at the Human Rights Council.
