The Embassy of Algeria in Islamabad received a steady stream of Pakistani dignitaries and members of the diplomatic community offering condolences on the passing of former Algerian President Liamine Zeroual, who died on 29 March 2026 at the age of 84 after a long illness.
The embassy opened a condolence book to facilitate friends of Algeria in Pakistan to express their sympathies. Mr Liamine Zeroual served as Algeria’s president from 1994 to 1999 and is remembered for steering the country through the Black Decade and for initiating the Civil Concord law aimed at national reconciliation.
On 2 April, Chairman Senate Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani visited the Algerian embassy and recorded his condolences in the book. He was welcomed by Ambassador Dr Brahim Romani and accompanied by Ms Misbah Khar, Pakistan’s representative to the Inter Parliamentary Speakers Conference. In his entry, Mr Gillani paid tribute to Liamine Zeroual’s leadership during a critical period and praised his efforts to restore stability and democratic progress.
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Ambassador Tariq Fatimi and Additional Secretary Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Hamid Asghar Khan also called on Ambassador Dr Brahim Romani to convey Pakistan’s sympathies to the Algerian mission. Their visits underscored Pakistan’s solidarity with the Algerian people at this time of mourning.
Numerous envoys from Africa, the Arab world and beyond registered their condolences at the embassy. Among those paying respects were the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and ambassadors from Turkmenistan, Egypt, Libya, Ethiopia, Tunisia, Somalia, Rwanda, Romania, Sri Lanka, Yemen, Oman, Palestine and Indonesia, reflecting broad diplomatic sympathy for the legacy of Liamine Zeroual.
The steady flow of visitors to the Algerian embassy highlighted the personal and diplomatic respect held for the former president and reinforced ties between Pakistan and Algeria during this period of shared mourning.
