Pakistan Romania ties strengthened in Senate meeting

Chairman Senate meets Romanian Ambassador to advance Pakistan Romania ties through cultural exchange, trade, parliamentary cooperation and refugee support.

Ambassador of Romania to Pakistan Dr. Dan Stoenescu called on Chairman Senate Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani at his official residence in Islamabad on April 3, 2026, in a meeting focused on strengthening Pakistan Romania ties across political, cultural and economic spheres.

The Chairman expressed his appreciation for the recording and choral score of Pakistan’s National Anthem presented by Romania’s renowned Madrigal–Marin Constantin Choir, calling it a meaningful cultural gesture that deepens people-to-people connections. He thanked the Ambassador, the choir artists and Romanian authorities for the initiative.

Chairman Gilani conveyed sincere good wishes for the success of Romania’s government formed after the May 2025 presidential elections and described Romania as an important partner in Eastern Europe and the Black Sea region, noting its constructive approach on matters of Pakistan’s interest at the European Union level.

Underscoring the historical roots of bilateral relations, he highlighted existing agreements and memoranda of understanding that provide a solid framework for enhanced cooperation in political, economic and defense fields. Emphasising the value of parliamentary diplomacy, the Chairman welcomed the establishment of Parliamentary Friendship Groups for Romania in both the Senate and the National Assembly of Pakistan and proposed increased interaction between parliamentary groups of the two countries to further deepen Pakistan Romania ties.

On regional issues, Chairman Gilani reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to peace and reiterated that dialogue and negotiations remain the most effective means to resolve conflicts. He drew attention to the long-standing Afghan refugee challenge, noting Pakistan has hosted over 3.5 million Afghan refugees for decades and called for sustained international support to secure a durable and dignified resolution.

Chairman Gilani also informed the Ambassador of his unanimous election as Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference and his role in hosting the conference in Islamabad last year, stressing that peace, security and development require collective parliamentary engagement.

On economic matters, the Chairman said Pakistan is keen to expand bilateral trade and investment with Romania and encouraged greater interaction between business communities, including participation in trade fairs and exhibitions. He welcomed Romania’s facilitation of work opportunities for Pakistani nationals and reiterated Pakistan’s readiness to export skilled workers through legal channels while seeking to expand academic linkages between universities of both countries.

The Ambassador of Romania appreciated Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting regional peace and affirmed Romania’s support for Pakistan’s diplomatic positions. The meeting concluded with both sides committing to sustained dialogue, deeper cooperation and increased cultural and people-to-people contact to advance Pakistan Romania ties.
