The Technical Advisory Group meeting for Polio Eradication in Pakistan and Afghanistan convened on 13-14 May, bringing together TAG members, polio experts, programme leaders and partners to review progress and refine strategies aimed at interrupting poliovirus transmission in 2026.
Dr. Sebastian Taylor, TAG Chair, underlined the need for robust regional collaboration, precise operational execution and sustained commitment across both endemic countries to achieve the objectives set for 2026. He highlighted that coordinated action and accountability at all levels remain critical to advance Polio Eradication.
Ms. Ayesha Raza Farooq, the Prime Minister’s Focal Person for Polio Eradication, reaffirmed Pakistan’s determination to make 2026 the year of polio interruption by prioritising strengthened campaign quality, intensified surveillance, deeper community engagement and enhanced cross-border coordination with Afghanistan.
Participants examined the current epidemiological picture, recent polio cases and environmental surveillance trends, alongside campaign performance data and operational priorities. Special attention was given to key transmission zones including Southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Karachi, where improved campaign quality and surveillance remain urgent priorities for Polio Eradication efforts.
Attendees agreed that sustained partnership, operational excellence and community support are essential to interrupt transmission. The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from programme leadership and partners to accelerate targeted actions and coordination through 2026 to achieve a polio-free Pakistan and a polio-free region.
