Islamabad: The Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat has taken notice of concerns surrounding Pakistan’s Civil Service Examination after social media reports alleged unusually high interview marks were awarded to recent CSS toppers, raising fresh questions over transparency, merit and public trust in the country’s most important competitive examination system.

During the meeting chaired by Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, the committee discussed key matters relating to the CSS examination, including the induction mechanism, selection criteria and the high failure ratio among candidates. Members raised concerns over the reports circulating online and questioned whether the examination and interview process was conducted with sufficient transparency.

The Federal Public Service Commission representative informed the committee that detailed marks are disclosed only to the candidates concerned. However, the committee was not satisfied with the limited explanation and directed the relevant authorities to submit a detailed written reply along with complete results at the next meeting.

The direction for complete results is significant because the CSS examination remains the main gateway to Pakistan’s superior civil services, where even small doubts about interview marks, selection standards or result transparency can damage confidence in the entire recruitment process.

The committee’s discussion also brought the high failure ratio in CSS examinations under scrutiny. Members examined whether the current testing system, interview criteria and induction mechanism are properly aligned with the purpose of selecting capable officers for federal services.

The controversy has put renewed pressure on the FPSC to explain how interview marks are awarded, how candidates are assessed and whether safeguards are strong enough to prevent favoritism, inconsistency or unfair advantage in the final selection process.

The Senate panel’s demand for a written reply and complete results indicates that the matter may not end with a routine briefing. The committee is expected to review the submitted record at its next meeting before deciding whether further examination of the CSS process is required.
