Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) has requested the Punjab government to provide the remaining Rs110 million of the allocated Rs230 million for water supply projects.
The RCB completed the work for construction of three underground tanks and filtration plants in February, but the government has released only Rs120 million so far. The RCB prepared the schemes for thickly-populated areas, including two underground water tanks on Misrial Road and Lane No 5 on Peshawar Road, and two filtration plants.
The remaining populated areas need improvements but the civic agency is waiting for the remaining funds. Provincial government urged to construct more underground and overhead water tanks
The RCB has requested the provincial government to release funds to construct more underground and overhead water tanks to store and provide water to the local residents from Khanpur Dam and tube wells.
While the RCB is receiving nine million gallon daily (MGD) water, Wasa six MGD, and CDA 10 MGD from Khanpur Dam, it has also requested the federal government to increase the water quota from the dam. However, The underground water level has decreased in most areas of the Rawalpindi and Chaklala cantonments, leading to severe water shortages in summers.
The residents mostly rely on water from private tankers that charge Rs2200 to Rs3000 per tanker, which has increased after the recent surge in petroleum prices.
