ISLAMABAD: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Islamabad has announced a schedule of protest sit-ins in different parts of the federal capital against the petroleum levy and the increase in prices of petroleum products.
According to JI Islamabad, the participants of the sit-ins will listen live to an address by Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Ameer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman. The party has demanded that the government abolish the petroleum levy and provide immediate relief to the people.
The party said all sit-ins would be held from 8:30pm to 10pm. The protest schedule includes Ghouri Town on August 23, Karachi Company on August 24, G-7/3 on August 25, B-17 on August 27, PWD on August 28, Bhara Kahu on August 29, Jhangi Syedan on August 29, and Lehtrar Road on August 31.
Local JI office-bearers and leaders will address the gatherings, while Hafiz Naeemur Rehman’s address will be broadcast live. The party has appealed to citizens to participate in large numbers in the sit-ins being held in their respective areas.
JI said the protest campaign against the petroleum levy was not limited to Islamabad and was also under way in different parts of the country, with the public being mobilised to join the movement.
The party maintained that the government was placing an additional burden on the people through various taxes and levies on petroleum products. It said the rise in petrol prices affects transport, essential commodities and overall inflation.
Jamaat-e-Islami warned that if the government did not abolish the petroleum levy, the sit-ins would be expanded further and the protest struggle for public rights would continue.
