England produced a commanding all-round performance to beat Sri Lanka by 119 runs in the first T20 International at Southampton, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Batting first, England piled up a formidable 254 for 4 in their 20 overs. Captain Harry Brook led from the front with a brilliant unbeaten 114 off 49 balls, hitting 10 fours and six sixes. He completed his century from just 42 deliveries.
Brook was well supported by former captain Jos Buttler, who struck a rapid 80 off 44 balls. The pair shared a decisive 128-run partnership from only 60 balls to put England firmly in control. Will Jacks also chipped in with 21 off 12 balls.
Chasing a huge target, Sri Lanka never found momentum and were bowled out for 135 in 19 overs. Dunith Wellalage top-scored for the visitors with 33 off 21 balls, while Dasun Shanaka made 24 off 14.
Sonny Baker was the pick of England’s bowlers, taking three wickets for 12 runs in his four overs. Jamie Overton and Liam Dawson claimed two wickets each.
Brook was named Player of the Match for his match-winning century. The victory also extended England’s winning streak against Sri Lanka in T20 Internationals to 13 consecutive matches.
The second T20I will be played in Cardiff on Thursday, September 17.
