The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), under its EU-funded Deliver Justice Project, recently conducted comprehensive training sessions for prison staff in Balochistan, aimed at improving prisoner safety, rehabilitation, human rights standards, and inmate reintegration.

These sessions focused on educating participants, including Assistant Superintendents, Warders, and Matrons, on the Nelson Mandela Rules—international standards that emphasize humane treatment of prisoners. Staff received thorough instruction on strengthening security protocols within prison facilities, thereby improving both inmate welfare and overall institutional safety.

Another key aspect of the training highlighted the importance of vocational skills development for inmates. Equipping prisoners with professional skills is critical for their successful reintegration into society upon release, reducing recidivism rates and fostering a meaningful second chance.

At the conclusion of the sessions, the Inspector General of the Balochistan Prison Department presented the completion certificates to attendees. In doing so, he reaffirmed his agency’s unwavering commitment to a human-centered approach to correctional governance. This initiative underscores Balochistan’s continued efforts to align correctional practices with international human rights norms and standards.
