Counter Terrorism Efforts in the Digital Age

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), in collaboration with Meta, hosted a high-level workshop titled “Counter Terrorism in the Digital Age” at PTA headquarters. The event convened global experts, representatives from law enforcement agencies, and key stakeholders to enhance digital safety and foster coordinated approaches in combating online extremism.

Chairman PTA, Major General (R) Hafeez ur Rehman, along with Dr. Nawab Osman, Meta’s Lead for Dangerous Organizations and Individuals (DOI) Policy, participated in the workshop. Both senior representatives highlighted the importance of establishing effective collaboration between regulatory authorities and industry leaders to tackle evolving challenges posed by extremist content shared online.

During extensive discussions and presentations, participants explored innovative strategies and global best practices designed to identify, monitor, and counter extremist narratives across online platforms. Experts emphasized capacity-building for law enforcement agencies to address digital threats proactively and effectively.

Attendees agreed that public-private partnerships and international collaboration remain essential in promoting digital security and reducing potential harms stemming from terrorist propaganda online. The workshop underscored the commitment of PTA and international organizations like Meta to prioritize robust, cooperative measures aimed at safeguarding citizens while respecting fundamental rights and freedoms.
