**Punjab Prepares for Introduction of HPV Vaccine in Routine Immunization**
Punjab has made significant progress towards introducing the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine into its routine immunization program, in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO). The Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) Punjab recently held an intensive two-day operational workshop to train district EPI managers, equipping them with the necessary skills for a smooth rollout of the HPV vaccine ahead of a province-wide campaign planned for September.
The latest workshop in Islamabad provided hands-on operational training to a second cohort of district managers, following the successful training of the first batch of Master Trainers in Multan. These sessions are vital steps as Punjab authorities gear up to add the HPV vaccine to the routine immunization schedule and conduct an organized campaign.
The workshops covered a comprehensive range of topics essential for effective vaccine deployment at the district level. Discussions included the global and national burden of HPV and cervical cancer, campaign strategies, standard operating procedures for vaccination sessions, cold chain and supply management, real-time monitoring, management of adverse events following immunization (AEFI), crisis communication, and field-based activities such as advocacy and social mobilization (ASCM). Technical experts from WHO, UNICEF, JHPIEGO, and Acasus led various sessions to ensure that district teams are well-prepared for their roles.
Notable figures present included Dr. Jamshaid Ahmed, Head of Office, WHO Sub Office Punjab; Dr. Mehwish Bhatti, Additional Director VPD Surveillance; and Dr. Muhammad Farid, Technical Officer, EMRO. They highlighted the crucial importance of robust and pragmatic operational planning at every administrative level to ensure the effectiveness of the upcoming vaccination campaign.
Cervical cancer remains a significant public health issue in Pakistan, ranking as the third most common cancer among women and the second most prevalent among women of reproductive age. The introduction of the HPV vaccine represents a major step forward in the country’s efforts to prevent cervical cancer and protect women’s health across Punjab.
