Women Parliamentary Leadership Driving SDG Progress

A recent dialogue organized by the Parliamentary Taskforce on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlighted the pivotal role of women parliamentarians in driving Pakistan’s SDG agenda forward. The event, titled “Implementation of the SDGs in a Rapidly Changing Global Context,” brought together key lawmakers and officials to discuss progress and challenges in achieving the SDGs nationally.

Syed Shamoon Hashmi, Special Secretary (SI) of the National Assembly, praised the increasing leadership of women in parliament, emphasizing their contributions to both legislation and oversight. He described their involvement as a strong example of inclusive and participatory governance, noting that their growing influence is a positive sign for the advancement of sustainable development in Pakistan.

The dialogue convened several prominent government figures, including Minister of State for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Kesoo Mal Kheal Das, Minister of State for Climate Change and Coordination Dr. Shezra Mansab Ali Khan Kharal, and Parliamentary Secretary for Information and Broadcasting Barrister Danyal Chaudhry. Also in attendance were Parliamentary Secretary for Water Resources Ms. Nikhat Shakeel, Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Climate Change and Environmental Protection Ms. Munaza Hassan, and multiple Members of the National Assembly (MNAs).

Discussions centered around the need for proactive legislative initiatives and effective oversight to meet the SDG targets. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to promoting sustainable development and underlined the importance of collaborative efforts across government sectors. The event showcased a united front among Pakistan’s lawmakers, with a particular spotlight on the leadership and contributions of women in steering the country’s progress on the international development agenda.
