Pakistan has taken a leading role in championing a regional approach to addressing plastic pollution and improving access to green financing at the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) meeting in Geneva. Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Malik, led a high-level dialogue with representatives from Bangladesh, Egypt, Tajikistan, Malaysia, and Sudan to forge consensus on key climate issues affecting developing nations.

During the discussions, Dr. Malik emphasized the need for a fair and effective Global Plastics Treaty, drawing attention to the disparities in green financing. He highlighted that countries with the highest plastic consumption often receive the largest share of green financial resources, while developing nations shoulder the most severe environmental and socio-economic impacts of plastic pollution.

The talks also focused on establishing more equitable mechanisms for green financing, technology transfer, and capacity building. Dr. Malik reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to advocating for global financing structures that prioritize support for countries most vulnerable to climate and environmental challenges, ensuring that aid is both accessible and effective for those who need it most.

The meeting underscored the importance of regional cooperation and collective action in shaping international policies on plastic pollution and sustainable development, particularly for those countries disproportionately affected by climate change.
