Federal Minister for Health Mustafa Kamal visited the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) to evaluate the new online registration and licensing system for medical devices, which has significantly streamlined and improved the regulatory process in the country. The new digital platform has accelerated the approval process, reduced bureaucratic barriers, and brought Pakistan’s regulatory standards closer to international benchmarks.

During his visit, the Health Minister received a detailed briefing from DRAP’s Chief Executive Officer on the digital system’s implementation. The system, designed specifically for medical device regulation, has processed 940 applications so far. Of these, 188 have already been approved, with digital licenses issued to the relevant companies. The remaining applications are currently under review and will be finalized within the established timelines.

Officials highlighted that the transition to a digital platform has transformed the medical device licensing process in Pakistan. Previously, obtaining a license could take up to 18 to 24 months, causing delays for businesses and affecting timely access to essential medical equipment. Under the new system, licenses are being granted within only 20 days—a significant improvement that supports both healthcare providers and industry stakeholders.

Minister Kamal emphasized that this shift to digitization has not only simplified regulatory procedures for businesses, both domestic and foreign, but has also enhanced the quality and availability of medical devices across Pakistan. He noted that the digital system promotes transparency, operational efficiency, and public service by allowing citizens and companies to submit applications and receive licenses online, even from their homes.

The Health Minister further stated that aligning the regulatory framework with international standards has increased confidence in Pakistan’s medical device industry at the global level. The initiative is expected to attract further investment and foster growth within the local sector, ultimately benefitting Pakistan’s healthcare system and ensuring better health outcomes for the population.
