Members of Pakistan’s Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights have outlined a comprehensive strategy to accelerate polio eradication efforts in the country. In a recent meeting, lawmakers discussed pressing challenges surrounding polio transmission and agreed on a coordinated plan to address them through legislative reform, increased awareness, and improved coordination across all provinces.

The caucus stressed the need for a unified approach, emphasizing that eradicating polio remains a national priority requiring sustained, multi-faceted action. Members recommended a series of steps, including the introduction of new legislative and policy measures to strengthen the institutions responsible for polio eradication.

A key proposal was the creation of an Inter-Provincial Parliamentary Taskforce. This body would facilitate better coordination between provincial governments and ensure a consistent, nationwide response to polio outbreaks. In addition, members advocated for school-based awareness programmes and vaccination campaigns to reach more children directly, citing the importance of engaging educational institutions in health initiatives.

Recognizing the role of misinformation in hindering vaccination efforts, the caucus called for comprehensive community sensitization campaigns. These would focus on building public trust, dispelling myths about vaccines, and encouraging parental participation in immunization drives. Members also highlighted the need for stronger budgetary oversight and resource mobilization, aiming to secure adequate and sustainable funding to support eradication initiatives.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from all members to work closely with national and international stakeholders. The Parliamentary Caucus reaffirmed its dedication to eliminating polio from Pakistan, vowing collective action and oversight to achieve lasting results.

Attendees included PCCR Convenor Dr. Nikhat Shakeel Khan, Secretary and Treasurer of the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus Dr. Shahida Rehmani and Ms. Shahida Begum, as well as several Members of the National Assembly, including Syeda Shehla Raza, Ms. Rana Ansar, Ms. Sofia Saeed Shah, Ms. Shaheen, Ms. Zainab Mehmood Baloch and Ms. Kiran Haider.
