Sustainable Local Services Workshop in Lahore

The Punjab Local Government Department recently hosted a workshop in Lahore focusing on sustainable solutions for municipal service delivery. Organized in partnership with the Punjab Municipal Development Fund Company (PMDFC) and German development agency GIZ, the event brought together key officials, including Secretary Local Government Shakil Ahmad Mian, Special Secretaries Arshad Baig and Asia Gul, MD PMDFC Zahid Aziz, and representatives from several Punjab districts.

The workshop, titled “Strengthening Local Services – Reflections on Sustainability,” addressed innovative approaches to improving essential public services in urban and rural communities. Participants discussed practical strategies for enhancing local governance, and a new sewage kit was introduced as part of efforts to modernize service infrastructure. A documentary presented during the workshop highlighted successful local initiatives, illustrating how targeted reforms can drive tangible improvements.

Secretary Shakil Ahmad Mian underlined the impact of the newly implemented e-billing system, which has led to better revenue collection and more efficient municipal services. He also announced the introduction of formal regulations for the registration of minority marriages and emphasized ongoing training programs designed to strengthen the capacity of local institutions.

Special Secretary Asia Gul drew attention to the recent establishment of Women Facilitation Centers, aiming to ensure greater gender inclusion in local governance. MD PMDFC Zahid Aziz reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to providing technical assistance to local governments across Punjab.

The event concluded with participants collectively pledging to maintain progress in enhancing local service delivery, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and inclusive development.
