PMAS-AAUR joins UN Climate Programme to expand climate research and student-led projects on adaptation and sustainable agriculture in Pakistan.

Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi (PMAS-AAUR) has been selected to take part in the UN Climate Programme, a United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change initiative that links universities with global climate priorities. The partnership is designed to strengthen research, education and innovation focused on the climate crisis.

Under the UN Climate Programme, a cohort of PMAS-AAUR students will carry out supervised research projects that examine climate change impacts, adaptation strategies and sustainable solutions relevant to Pakistan and the wider South Asian region. These projects will provide hands-on experience in data analysis, fieldwork and policy-oriented research while aligning student work with international climate agendas.

Prof. Dr. Qamar-uz-Zaman, Vice Chancellor of PMAS-AAUR, said the university is proud to join the programme and that the collaboration marks a major step forward in advancing institutional capacity for climate research and sustainability. He emphasized that the opportunity will empower students and faculty to address local environmental challenges while contributing to global climate action.

The university plans to prioritise applied research and innovation across areas such as sustainable agriculture, renewable energy adoption and climate-resilient farming practices for arid and semi-arid zones. Active participation in the UN Climate Programme also reflects Pakistan’s growing presence in international climate discussions and reinforces PMAS-AAUR’s role in developing practical solutions for communities vulnerable to climate change.
