**Experts Highlight Need for Robust Carbon Market Framework in Pakistan at Climate Governance Training**
At a recent capacity building training for government officials in Karachi, Mr. Syed Bulent Sohail, Managing Partner at Sohail & Partners, LLP, and Ms. Raima Mehmood, Policy & Research Coordinator at Transparency International Pakistan, led a detailed session on establishing an effective carbon market architecture in Pakistan. The initiative was part of a broader program aimed at bolstering institutional capacity for climate budgeting, enhancing transparency in climate finance, and ensuring successful policy implementation.
During the session, Mr. Sohail and Ms. Mehmood addressed the fundamental concepts and global best practices of carbon markets, including the mechanisms through which countries can trade carbon credits and achieve emissions reduction targets. They emphasized the importance of regulatory frameworks, transparency, and monitoring systems for a credible and efficient carbon market in Pakistan.
Participants also examined the current status of climate governance in the country, identifying gaps in institutional readiness and technical expertise. The trainers underscored the critical role of government agencies in developing policy tools that can attract investment and support Pakistan’s commitments to climate action.
The capacity-building workshop provided a platform for government officials to discuss the challenges of climate budgeting and the need for transparent financial processes to track climate-related funding. Attendees were encouraged to leverage insights from the session to design and implement policies that support sustainable economic growth while addressing climate change risks in Pakistan.
