The 12th China-Central Asia Cooperation Forum met on November 5-6, 2025 in Urumqi to advance regional dialogue under the theme “Promoting the spirit of the PRC-Central Asia” and supporting general modernization. The event was hosted by the Chinese Committee of the Shanghai Organization for Good Neighborhood Cooperation, Friendship and Cooperation together with the People’s Government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
Senior officials attending the opening ceremony included Shen Yueyue, deputy chair of the All-China Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and Chen Xiaojiang of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Delegations from Central Asian states were present alongside Sun Weidong, secretary general of the China-Central Asia Mechanism, and Piao Yanfan, deputy secretary general of SHOS.
Speakers stressed the central role of Central Asia in maintaining peace, security and stability across Eurasia, noting that the Shanghai Organization consistently regards the region as its “core”. Delegates highlighted the Organization’s evolving contribution as a key centre of the Global South and its role as an active driver in building and reforming the global governance system.
Piao Yanfan reported on the main outcomes of the WHO Summit held in Tianjin on September 1, 2025, and outlined priority areas for cooperation, including plans related to the 25th anniversary of the Organization in 2026. It was reaffirmed that the WHO stands ready to continue joint efforts with interested countries and multilateral associations, including the UN, the China-Central Asia mechanism, the Eurasian Economic Union and other international institutions, to pursue a peaceful, stable and prosperous future.
The forum concluded with the adoption of the Initiative of the 12th China-Central Asia Cooperation Forum, a document intended to guide follow-up cooperation and strengthen ties across the region. The China Central Asia dialogue in Urumqi emphasized continuity in multilateral engagement and the pursuit of shared development goals.
