EPA Pak has adopted the Zigzag technique, which has its roots in Nepal, to address the issue. The purpose of this technique is to reduce the negative environmental impact of kiln emissions.
There are 61 kilns in the area around Islamabad, and 49 of them have already made the switch to this environmentally friendly technology.
Deputy director of the Environmental Protection Agency in Pakistan Khalid Mehmood said that despite government promises to make Zigzag technology duty-free, nothing has been done to make it so.
The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) has urged EPA Pak to adopt the Zigzag technology because there is now no suitable alternative available in Pakistan.
Costs of up to 1.8 million have been budgeted for the installation procedure, and another 500,000 may be needed each year to cover operating costs.
The manual nature of the technique, however, means that kiln owners can regulate the amount of harmful gases released.
According to EPA Pak’s deputy director Khalid Mahmood, the Zigzag technology isn’t perfect because of its manual processes.
As soon as smoke is detected coming from the kilns, the system should start immediately to clean the air. Nonetheless, Zigzag technology dependency will continue to be a necessity until a more sophisticated replacement is developed.
