Competition Law Awareness Session for Karachi Businesses

The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP), in partnership with the Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OICCI), held an awareness session in Karachi to highlight the importance of competition laws for the business community and foreign investors. The session aimed to educate participants about fair competition practices and encourage a better understanding of the regulatory environment.

Key representatives from the CCP, including Member Bushra Naz Malik, Senior Officers Maryam Parvaiz and Maliha Qudoos, participated in the session. The Secretary General of OICCI welcomed the CCP delegation and praised their efforts in organizing the event.

During her address, Bushra Naz Malik outlined the actions taken by the CCP against anti-competitive activities in sectors such as public procurement, sugar, electric fans, and flat steel. She emphasized the commission’s commitment to ensuring a level playing field across various industries.

Maryam Parvaiz, Secretary of the CCP, delivered a detailed presentation on the main points of the Competition Act 2010, focusing on misleading marketing and regulations related to mergers and acquisitions. She highlighted that these efforts have contributed to attracting over 42 billion rupees in foreign investment over the past year.

Senior Joint Director Maliha Qudoos spoke about the dangers of abuse of market dominance and cartelization, informing attendees about the negative impact these prohibited practices have on markets and consumers.

The OICCI Secretary General commended the CCP’s role in promoting fair competition and foreign investment, and called for additional awareness sessions to benefit the business community in the future.

The session concluded with a question-and-answer segment, where representatives from the pharmaceutical, FMCG, and engineering sectors engaged with the CCP officials. Topics discussed included competition laws, methods for detecting cartels, and the role of artificial intelligence in regulatory enforcement.
