CPDI urged Punjab Governor to strengthen the RTI Commission by filling the Information Commissioner post and supporting journalist safety legislation.

CPDI held a one-on-one meeting with Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan to press for urgent measures to strengthen the RTI Commission in the province. The delegation, led by Moonus Kayinat Zahra, PM CPDI, highlighted the need to provide the commission with adequate resources and to fill the vacant Information Commissioner post to ensure timely and effective implementation of access to information laws.

The CPDI team also sought the Governor’s backing for provincial journalist safety legislation similar to the law in Sindh and federal initiatives. The delegation warned that risks to reporters have grown, particularly after the PECA 2025 amendments, and stressed that robust legal protections and proper implementation are needed to safeguard media practitioners across Punjab.

The Governor acknowledged the concerns raised about the RTI Commission and journalist safety, expressed appreciation for CPDI’s advocacy work, and committed to taking initiatives to address these issues. CPDI underscored that an empowered RTI Commission and enforceable journalist safety measures are essential for transparency and press freedom in Punjab.
