Press Freedom Concerns Grow as CPNE Islamabad–Rawalpindi Committee Criticizes Restrictions on Expression
ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad–Rawalpindi Committee of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) expressed serious concern over the state of press freedom and the right to free expression in the country. In a meeting chaired by Committee Chairman Yahya Sadozai, members strongly criticized the negative impact of the PECA Act, growing restrictions on expression, and increasing limitations placed on print media.
Participants noted that print media has always been regarded as a responsible pillar of journalism, yet it continues to be treated in the same manner as outlets accused of irresponsible conduct. They described this approach as not only inappropriate but also potentially damaging to the government’s own narrative. Members cautioned that if the current policies continue, the government will eventually realize the severity of its stance, but by then corrective measures may no longer be possible.
The committee emphasized that print media has consistently supported the state on national and diplomatic fronts, acting in the national interest. They stated that it is extremely rare for any print journalist to publish content that harms the state. Despite this, increasing pressure, restrictions, and actions under laws such as PECA have weakened the environment for free expression — laws which, the members noted, many of today’s policymakers previously condemned while in opposition.
Members agreed that mere statements are not enough and that CPNE must adopt an effective and comprehensive strategy to safeguard media rights. They underscored the importance of holding seminars, conferences, and engaging on official platforms to ensure strong representation at the policy level. The meeting also welcomed the restoration of the Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) and called for regular review of matters related to ABC, registrations, and ITNE so that issues facing media organizations can be addressed more effectively.
At the conclusion of the meeting, prayers were offered for the late Aamir Mehmood and other deceased CPNE members, and their contributions to press freedom were acknowledged with respect.
