The Diamond Butterfly Award will hold its inaugural ceremony in Moscow on November 28, presented in partnership with the Russian Ministry of Culture and the Russian Cultural Foundation. The new Eurasian film prize aims to promote cinema that highlights spiritual and moral values, strengthens ties between Eurasian and national cultures, and underscores culture’s role in shaping public consciousness.
The award, designed as a diamond-encrusted butterfly by renowned Russian artist Yuri Kuper, will be presented across twelve categories. Winners will receive both the trophy and monetary support of up to one million US dollars, a move organisers say will encourage high-quality filmmaking that resonates with ethical and cultural themes.
Elena Golovonina, Director General of the Russian Cultural Foundation, said the Diamond Butterfly Award offers a balanced alternative to some contemporary trends in global cinema. “We believe true art creates hope, brings people together and reinforces enduring moral values. Under the Diamond Butterfly Award we will promote films that reflect these principles and open doors to new artists and collaborative opportunities,” she said.
The Eurasian Academy of Cinematic Arts held its opening event in April 2025 with representatives from more than twenty countries, including Pakistan, Armenia, Belarus, Vietnam, Venezuela, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Cuba, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan. Pakistani filmmakers and cultural institutions will have the opportunity to participate and to showcase work that aligns with the award’s cultural and moral focus.
Organisers encourage filmmakers and industry stakeholders to follow the Diamond Butterfly Award on social media for updates and submission details.
