The Embassy of Sweden in Pakistan emphasized that a strong press and a vibrant civil society are essential pillars of a healthy society, following productive meetings with representatives of the media and civil society in Islamabad and Lahore.
Embassy officials met with journalists, editors and civil society actors to exchange views on the conditions for independent reporting and civic engagement. Participants discussed challenges facing the media and NGOs as well as opportunities to strengthen professional standards and public trust.
Speakers stressed the importance of protecting freedom of expression, ensuring the safety of journalists, and fostering a diverse information environment that supports transparency and accountability. Capacity building, dialogue across sectors and collaboration between media and civil society were highlighted as practical ways to reinforce these pillars.
The Embassy reiterated its commitment to continued engagement and partnership with Pakistani media and civil society organizations to support an open, pluralistic public sphere and robust democratic institutions.
