Ethiopian Ambassador Highlights Country’s Peaceful Efforts for Sea Access in Talks with Turkmenistan

Ethiopia’s ambassador to Turkmenistan, Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula, has emphasized his country’s peaceful and diplomatic initiatives to secure access to the sea during a meeting with Turkmenistan’s Foreign Minister, Rashid Meredov. The discussion took place on the sidelines of the United Nations conference on landlocked developing countries in Awaza, Turkmenistan.

Both officials held talks on deepening cooperation between Ethiopia and Turkmenistan in areas such as business, trade, investment, agriculture, aviation, technology, and culture. Ambassador Dr. Jemal explained to the Turkmen minister that access to the sea remains an existential requirement for Ethiopia’s more than 130 million citizens and is fully aligned with both national aspirations and international law.

He also stressed that enabling Ethiopia to reach the sea would boost economic growth, promote peace, and enhance regional integration and prosperity. In response, Foreign Minister Meredov reiterated the significance of sea access for landlocked countries, calling it vital for sustainable and equitable development.

The Turkmen official commended Ethiopia’s recent economic progress and its leadership in advancing regional integration. He also expressed his country’s commitment to strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation with Ethiopia.
