Federal Minister Aurangzeb Khan Khichi expressed deep sorrow at the passing of Syed Arif Jafri, the former Director of Performing Arts at the National Art Council. The Minister highlighted Syed Arif Jafri’s prominent role in promoting music across Pakistan and noted the deep loss to the country’s artistic community.
Recognised as one of Pakistan’s most renowned flute players, Syed Arif Jafri pursued advanced musical studies abroad and dedicated his life to nurturing emerging talent. His performances and mentorship helped raise the profile of classical and regional music traditions within Pakistan.
Aside from his performance career, Syed Arif Jafri was an accomplished author best known for his book Asian Music, which reflected his scholarly engagement with music and its cultural contexts. His work bridged practice and research, influencing both performers and students.
The Ministry of National Heritage and Culture paid rich tribute to Syed Arif Jafri’s lifelong services, with the Federal Minister describing his contributions to the fine arts as memorable and lasting. The Minister said the artist’s passing is a significant loss for the performing arts in Pakistan.
Syed Arif Jafri’s funeral will be held today (Tuesday) at 7:00 p.m. at H-11 Graveyard in Islamabad, where colleagues, students and music lovers will gather to pay their respects.
