Fazaia Medical College (FMC) at Air University recently hosted a two-day self-defense workshop aimed at empowering women with practical skills and confidence. Organized in collaboration with the Pakistan Martial Arts Association (PMAA) and IFMSA-Pakistan, the event received widespread appreciation from students, faculty, and guests, sending a powerful message about the importance of equipping women to protect themselves.

The workshop was launched under the leadership of Maj Gen (R) Muhammad Tahir Khadim, Principal of FMC, who described the initiative as “a shield of confidence” in the face of growing challenges for women in society. He emphasized the importance of mental resilience alongside academic accomplishment, reminding participants that the tools learned would help them face life with greater courage and preparedness.

Brig (R) Prof Muhammad Mazhar Hussain, Vice Principal of FMC, praised the sessions for their transformational impact. He noted the pride in seeing young women actively learning to defend themselves, and stressed the need for similar programs across Pakistan.

A highlight of the event was the keynote address by Ms. Qurrat-ul-Ain from the Pakistan Sports Board, who spoke about the ripple effect of female empowerment, asserting that one empowered woman inspires many others. The technical sessions were led by Anwar Mohiuddin, President of PMAA, along with a team of female instructors. Unlike standard martial arts demonstrations, the workshop centered on real-life defense tactics, including knife disarming, pistol defense, pressure-point strikes, and developing situational awareness. Anwar Mohiuddin underscored that self-defense is about survival and dignity, not aggression.

The workshop attracted students from leading universities such as NUST, FAST, NDU, Bahria University, Air University, IIUI, Federal Medical & Dental College, and FMC itself, many of whom were participating in self-defense training for the first time.

Special guests included Ms. Aisha Farrukh and Ms. Sonaina Younus from Serene Air, who commended the initiative and the professionalism of both trainers and students. Ms. Farrukh highlighted the importance of safety, drawing parallels between aviation and everyday life, and announced that Serene Air would partner with PMAA to introduce self-defense training for its female staff in major cities. Ms. Younus echoed these sentiments, calling for such empowering programs to be expanded nationwide.

The workshop concluded with a ceremony where participants received certificates and prizes. Anwar Mohiuddin encouraged participants to share what they had learned within their communities, framing the event as the beginning of a broader movement for women’s safety and empowerment in Pakistan. Principal Tahir Khadim reflected the event’s spirit in his closing remarks, stating that empowering women strengthens families and, ultimately, the nation.

The event ended amid applause, marking a significant step forward in promoting confidence, courage, and resilience among Pakistani women.
