Gilani Strengthens Pakistan Azerbaijan Ties

Chairman Gilani meets Speaker Sahiba Gafarova in Baku to deepen Pakistan Azerbaijan ties and invite Azerbaijan to the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers Conference in Islamabad.

Baku/ Islamabad, October 28, 2025 — Chairman Senate Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani met Speaker Sahiba Gafarova of the Milli Majlis in Baku on the sidelines of the International Parliamentary Conference marking the 30th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s constitution.

Chairman Gilani conveyed warm greetings to Azerbaijani leadership and reiterated Pakistan’s appreciation for the long-standing, brotherly relationship between the two countries. He said the pursuit of peace, security and prosperity is a shared mission that binds Pakistan Azerbaijan relations through faith, history and close friendship.

The chairman welcomed Speaker Gafarova’s delegation and recalled their recent interaction in Islamabad, expressing satisfaction at being back in Baku. He highlighted the recent Trilateral Conference of Pakistan, Azerbaijan and Türkiye held in Islamabad as a milestone in regional parliamentary cooperation and an example of deepening parliamentary engagement.

Outlining the cultural roots of the partnership, Chairman Gilani referenced the historic Multani Caravanserai in Baku, a 14th-century inn that symbolises centuries of trade and cultural exchange between Multan and Azerbaijan. He noted his own ties to Multan and extended a personal invitation to Speaker Gafarova to visit the city, reinforcing people-to-people links within Pakistan Azerbaijan relations.

Reflecting on earlier bilateral engagements, he recalled discussions with President Ilham Aliyev at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2012 on energy, infrastructure and agriculture, saying those foundations continue to guide cooperation today. Chairman Gilani also congratulated Azerbaijan on steps taken to foster peace and stability through rapprochement with Armenia, and pledged Pakistan’s support for sustained development in the South Caucasus.

Speaker Sahiba Gafarova welcomed the chairman’s visit and thanked him for his support during events marking Azerbaijan’s Year of the Constitution and Statehood. She updated Chairman Gilani on recent peace-building initiatives with Armenia and underlined the need for enhanced inter-parliamentary cooperation to consolidate those gains.

Chairman Gilani invited the Azerbaijani leadership to participate in the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference to be hosted by the Senate of Pakistan in Islamabad from November 10–12, 2025, stressing that the gathering will be an important platform to discuss regional peace, security and development. He also highlighted ongoing engagement through multilateral forums such as the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network, and congratulated Azerbaijan on its re-election within NAM’s parliamentary structure.

Both leaders agreed to advance collaboration through regular parliamentary exchanges, mutual visits and joint initiatives focused on sustainable development, regional stability and stronger people-to-people connections. The meeting concluded in a warm and cordial atmosphere, reflecting the enduring bond between Pakistan and Azerbaijan.
