Dr Musadik Malik leads task force actions on water scarcity to secure Rabi and Kharif crops through equitable distribution, data-driven planning and provincial coordination.

The federal government convened a meeting of the Prime Minister’s Task Force on water scarcity in Islamabad, chaired by Federal Minister Dr. Musadik Malik, to assess risks to the upcoming Rabi and Kharif seasons and map immediate policy responses.

Senior officials from the Ministries of Water Resources, National Food Security, Planning, WAPDA and representatives of provincial irrigation departments and water management authorities joined the discussion to review current and projected water availability. The meeting examined recent data on cross-border water flows from India and year-on-year variances that could influence allocations for irrigation.

Participants flagged the alarming pace of groundwater depletion and discussed its direct implications for national food security and agricultural productivity. Emphasis was placed on translating technical assessments into practical measures that protect crop yields during both Rabi and Kharif cycles.

Deliberations focused on policy options for a more equitable and efficient distribution of water across tributaries and territories, with particular attention to enhancing interprovincial coordination. The task force considered strengthened monitoring, improved management protocols and targeted infrastructure adjustments to optimise available supplies.

Dr. Musadik Malik underscored that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan must receive their rightful shares of water, warning that no region should be left behind. He stressed adherence to the agreed national framework for allocations and the need to protect regional entitlements while managing shortages.

The federal leadership reiterated its commitment to data-driven planning and sustained collaboration between provinces and federal agencies. By prioritising sustainable management practices and coordinated action, the government aims to safeguard the agricultural economy and ensure long-term food security in the face of mounting water scarcity.
