HEC and partners update Computer Science curriculum with 14 specializations, professional certification, and practical field experience for Pakistani universities.

HEC convened the National Curriculum Review Committee at the Institute of Business Management in Karachi for a five-day meeting bringing together academia, industry partners and public sector stakeholders including PSEB, P@SHA and the Ministry of IT & Telecom to standardize and modernize Computer Science degree programmes at the tertiary level.

The revised Bachelor of Science in Computer Science introduces a Comprehensive Core and Elective Framework that allows up to 14 specializations, including Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Science, Cyber Security, Information Technology (IT), Computer Engineering, Computer Games Development, Multimedia and Animation, Robotics, Human–Computer Interaction, Internet of Things, Network Infrastructure and Cloud Computing, Quantum Computing and Health Informatics, while universities retain flexibility to propose additional relevant specializations within the approved framework.

A new Professional Certification Component has been integrated to strengthen academia-industry linkages and ensure graduates obtain immediately market-relevant skills, and detailed guidelines have been included to improve Practical Integration of Final Year Projects and Field Experience so students gain demonstrable applied competence before entering the workforce.

The curriculum revision aligns with the HEC Undergraduate Education Policy 2023, emphasising general education, interdisciplinary learning and applied competence. The Committee also endorsed an Associate Degree in Computing as a skill-based pathway for early-career professionals, with a bridge semester enabling progression into the BS Computer Science programme.

The updated curriculum was notified for implementation by higher education institutions on October 14, 2025. A group photograph at the IoBM meeting captured representatives from universities, industry and government, underscoring a collaborative effort to produce industry-ready Computer Science graduates and strengthen Pakistan’s digital education ecosystem.
