**Police Officials in Gujrat Receive Training on Human and Refugee Rights**

A specialized training session was held for police officials at the District Police Office (DPO) in Gujrat, aimed at enhancing their understanding and sensitivity towards human rights and refugee rights. Organized by Team ALAC-II Lahore, the workshop brought together law enforcement officers, legal experts, and representatives from the Society for Human Rights and Prisoners’ Aid (SHARP) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), underlining a joint commitment to ensuring the protection of vulnerable communities.

The session opened with remarks from ALAC Lawyer, Ms. Farzana Kouser, who introduced the work of SHARP and emphasized the organization’s long-standing collaboration with police in advancing legal protections for those at risk. She noted that such partnerships are vital for building a stronger, rights-respecting policing culture.

Fundamental human rights principles took center stage during a comprehensive session led by FM Ms. Arooj Un Nissa. This was followed by an in-depth presentation from UNHCR’s Ms. Ghazala Mirza, who outlined key aspects of international refugee law and detailed the responsibilities of law enforcement officials under both global and national frameworks.

A highlight of the workshop was an address by PD-ICT Mr. Aatif Afzal, who discussed the critical importance of grounding police work in human rights. He stressed that a thorough understanding of these principles is essential before delving into the specifics of refugee protection.

The event was attended by Mr. Rai Muhammad Riaz Mehar, DPO Gujrat, as Chief Guest. In his remarks, he commended SHARP’s ongoing efforts to build the capacity of police officials, emphasizing that such engagements are essential for both strengthening institutional resolve and safeguarding the rights of all individuals, including refugees. He lauded SHARP’s initiative as deserving the highest appreciation.

Active participants in the session included Mr. Muhammad Naeem (DSP HQs), station house officers from various police stations, inspectors, sub-inspectors, assistant sub-inspectors, and members of the Security Branch. Noteworthy contributions were made by Inspector Ms. Farzana, Mr. Arslan, Mr. Wahab Gillani, Mr. Itrat Shah, and Ms. Aqsa, who enriched the discussions with their insights and thoughtful engagement.

Special acknowledgement was given to Mr. Hassan Askari, In-Charge Investigation & Crime Wing, for his pivotal support in ensuring the session’s effectiveness, as well as to AFA Mr. Hamid Ali for providing robust logistical arrangements.

SHARP reiterated its commitment to promoting protection-sensitive policing and upholding the rule of law by continuing to engage and train law enforcement partners across Pakistan. The organization, in collaboration with UNHCR and relevant police authorities, intends to sustain these efforts to ensure the rights of all, leaving no one behind.
