Impact-Based Forecasting workshop in Multan helps Punjab farmers adapt to climate risks and protect crops through improved forecast use.

A two-day feedback workshop for the Impact-Based Forecasting initiative under the Green Climate Fund project Transforming the Indus Basin with Climate Resilient Agriculture and Water Management began on 24 November in Multan. The event brought technical teams and local stakeholders together to refine tools that translate weather forecasts into actionable advice for farmers.

More than 60 participants including meteorologists, irrigation and agriculture experts, farmers and policymakers joined the sessions to strengthen how forecasts are communicated and used on the ground. Focus on practical feedback ensured discussions targeted the needs of irrigation managers and farming communities across the Indus Basin.

Mr. Muhammad Aslam Javed, Member Agriculture Planning and Development Board Punjab, and the Director General of the Pakistan Meteorological Department were the chief guests and emphasised the importance of operationalising Impact-Based Forecasting so that timely, impact-oriented advisories reach those who rely on seasonal and short-term forecasts.

The workshop served as a hub of collaboration, refining forecast products and communication channels to better protect crops and livelihoods. Participants worked to ensure forecast information is tailored to agricultural decision making and local water management practices.

A sincere thank you to all partners, especially the Green Climate Fund and the governments of Punjab and Sindh, for supporting this important project and helping to build climate resilience across Pakistan’s agricultural heartland.
