Ambassador and Advisor to the Chairman Senate, Ms. Mishbah Khar, held a meeting with United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan, Mr. Mohamed Yahya, in Islamabad to discuss preparations for the upcoming Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference (ISC). The discussion covered plans for the high-profile event, as well as the urgent humanitarian needs facing Pakistan after recent devastating floods.
During the meeting, Ms. Khar provided a detailed update on the forthcoming Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference, which will be hosted in Islamabad. She formally invited parliamentary leaders to participate, highlighting the event as a unique platform for regional parliamentarians to exchange ideas, enhance collaboration, and build stronger partnerships. Ms. Khar emphasized that the conference is intended to promote multilateral cooperation, encourage constructive dialogue, and address shared regional challenges.
She was joined by Senior Director General Protocol, Mr. Tariq Bin Waheed, and outlined the main goals of the conference, which include reinforcing institutional relationships among member parliaments and creating opportunities for greater cooperation.
Ms. Khar also addressed the recent humanitarian crisis caused by torrential rains and flooding in Pakistan. She called on the United Nations to intensify its support for relief and recovery efforts, underlining Pakistan’s urgent need for external assistance. She noted the UN’s longstanding commitment to supporting developing nations in times of crisis, and urged greater engagement to help vulnerable communities recover from the current disaster.
The meeting also explored ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and UN agencies, including the possibility of joint initiatives across various sectors.
Mr. Mohamed Yahya thanked Ms. Khar for the briefing and the invitation to the ISC, and assured that the United Nations would fully support and participate in the conference.
