H.E. Mr. Akamatsu Shuichi, Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, visited Peshawar Museum on 15 December to reflect on the historic journey of Mahayana Buddhism from the Gandhara region to Japan. The Japan ambassador highlighted the enduring popularity of Gandhara Civilization’s Buddhist heritage in Japan and its cultural resonance across centuries.
During the visit the ambassador contemplated the links between archaeological treasures and living traditions, noting how Gandhara’s artistic and spiritual legacy continues to inspire scholars, practitioners and museum audiences in Japan. His observations drew attention to the deep historical connections that tie parts of Pakistan’s heritage to East Asian religious history.
The visit by the Japan ambassador underlines the role of cultural exchange in strengthening bilateral ties and opens opportunities for increased collaboration on preservation, research and public engagement around Gandhara heritage. The engagement helps raise awareness of Pakistan’s rich Buddhist past among Japanese institutions and audiences and may foster further scholarly and cultural cooperation.
