KOICA Peshawar inspected solar water schemes and a solarized ER in Peshawar, improving water access and emergency care for refugees and host communities.

On 17 September 2025 the KOICA Peshawar team carried out a monitoring visit to Peshawar under the project Supporting Afghan Refugees and Their Host Communities in Pakistan, a USD 5.65M initiative running from 2022 to 2025, to review progress in water, sanitation and healthcare interventions.

The mission examined three solar-powered water supply schemes in Baghbanan refugee village and Badaber camp, assessing operational performance and gathering feedback from residents. Beneficiaries reported that having clean water at home has markedly reduced the dangers previously faced by women and children who had to travel long distances to fetch water, and has eased everyday household burdens.

The delegation also inspected the Accident & Emergency unit at Khyber Teaching Hospital, where a rooftop solar system installed with KOICA support now provides reliable power to the emergency department. The solarized ER ensures uninterrupted emergency procedures and treatments, directly contributing to patient safety and continuity of care.

Khyber Teaching Hospital officials and medical staff expressed appreciation for the stable power supply and said the improved treatment environment in the emergency room benefits both refugees and host community patients. Mr. Kofi Ohenenana Dwomo, Head of UNHCR Peshawar Sub-office, thanked KOICA for a tangible contribution to local healthcare services.

KOICA Pakistan Office said it will continue efforts to expand water accessibility and strengthen healthcare resilience in refugee-hosting areas, aiming to sustain the gains achieved through the project in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and beyond.
