The Punjab Livestock Department held a key meeting to discuss breeding standards for local horse breeds, with a strong focus on improving data collection and staff training to support the sector’s development.
The meeting of the technical subcommittee was chaired by Punjab Secretary of Livestock Ahmed Aziz Tarar. Notable participants included Brigadier Muhammad Naeem, Commander of Mona Remount Veterinary and Farm Corps, and Dr Imran Kabir from Brooke Pakistan. Senior officials such as Director General Research Dr Muhammad Sajjad, Director General Extension Dr Muhammad Ashraf, Additional Secretary Technical Dr Usman Tahir, and Director Communication/Registrar Breeding Services Authority Dr Haider Ali were also present.
Attendees held detailed discussions on preparing a baseline dataset for local horse breeds. The participants emphasized the need for specialized training for field staff to ensure the accuracy and reliability of collected data. This data is expected to form the basis for comprehensive information regarding local horse breeds in the province.
The meeting underscored the critical importance of standardized data collection and proper field staff training as essential steps to improving breeding practices and preserving local horse genetics in Punjab.
