More than 80 government officials, industry leaders, and technical experts from around the world convened in Pohang, Republic of Korea, for the first Global Knowledge Exchange on Low-Carbon Steel. The event addressed the critical challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the steel industry, a sector responsible for approximately 8 percent of global emissions.
Hosted by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in collaboration with the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Pohang City Council, and leading industry partners, the two-and-a-half-day forum brought together representatives from both developed and developing countries. Participants explored a range of strategies to decarbonize steel production, including the adoption of hydrogen-based technologies, implementation of carbon pricing, and the establishment of emissions standards.
Discussions at the gathering emphasized the significance of international cooperation and knowledge sharing to accelerate progress toward a cleaner, more sustainable steel sector. Attendees also considered the challenges facing the transition, such as the need for large-scale investments and the development of supportive policies.
The event marked a significant step in shaping the global agenda for industrial decarbonization, underscoring the urgency of coordinated action as the steel industry seeks to meet climate goals and contribute to a greener future.
