The Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) is currently holding a two-week miniature painting workshop at the National Art Gallery in Islamabad, led by renowned artist and educator Farrah Mahmood Rana. The workshop has attracted participants from a variety of professional backgrounds, including engineers, doctors, advocates, architects, and artists, reflecting a growing interest in indigenous art forms beyond the traditional art community.

The first session introduced participants to Suffaid Qalam, a classical technique focused on creating fine white line drawings. Using traditional miniature brushes, known as qalam, attendees learned the foundational skills essential for classical miniature painting. The session emphasized not only technical mastery but also the cultural significance of this centuries-old artistic practice.

Farrah Mahmood Rana, a highly respected graduate of the National College of Arts and recipient of the President’s Award for Pride of Performance, leads the workshop. With experience exhibiting in more than 160 international shows, Rana brings a unique depth of knowledge and expertise to the program. Under her guidance, the workshop aims to provide both hands-on training and a cultural exchange, promoting a deeper appreciation for Pakistan’s artistic heritage.

Open to professionals and art enthusiasts with a background in visual arts, the initiative underscores the PNCA’s commitment to fostering artistic talent and encouraging cross-disciplinary engagement throughout the community. The ongoing sessions at the National Art Gallery offer a rare opportunity for participants to learn classical techniques while celebrating and preserving Pakistan’s rich miniature painting traditions.
