The Environmental Protection Department has imposed a fine of 1.5 million rupees on three construction companies working on the Nawaz Sharif IT City project for breaching environmental regulations. The department said the action follows inspections that found uncontrolled dust emissions at the site.
According to a formal letter sent to the CEO of the Central Business District, air quality monitors near the project recorded indices exceeding 500, prompting immediate enforcement measures. The construction firms have been directed to remit the penalty within three days.
The EPD has issued specific directives to control dust at the Nawaz Sharif IT City site, including daily water sprinkling, covering of construction materials in line with standard operating procedures, and installation of dust screening barriers and safety nets around work areas. These steps are aimed at bringing dust levels down and protecting nearby communities from hazardous air pollution.
Authorities warned that failure to implement the prescribed measures could result in stricter actions, including the possible sealing of the project. The department said it will continue monitoring compliance and expects the developers to prioritise mitigation at the Nawaz Sharif IT City to avoid further penalties.
