A delegation from the National Assembly Standing Committee on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, along with federal ministers and senior government officials, visited the National Emergencies Operation Center hosted by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for a detailed briefing and discussion concerning disaster management preparedness for upcoming climate-related threats.
The delegation, headed by Member of the National Assembly Ms. Munaza Hassan, included several prominent federal ministers and senior officials. Attendees included the Federal Minister for Water Resources, Mr. Mian Muhammad Mueen Wattoo; Minister for Science and Technology, Mr. Khalid Hussain Magsi; Minister for Energy (Power Division), Mr. Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari; Minister for National Food Security and Research, Mr. Rana Tanveer Hussain; Chairperson of the Federal Flood Commission, Mr. Ather Hameed; and Secretary for the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Ms. Aisha Humera Moriani.
Chairman NDMA, Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, provided a comprehensive briefing on anticipated threats stemming from monsoon events in 2025, an overview of national hazard assessments, and the authority’s strategic readiness to tackle emergency situations. General Malik introduced detailed aspects of NDMA’s operational capabilities, covering robust early warning systems, effective resource mobilization plans, and a designated workforce of trained emergency responders nationwide.
The visiting lawmakers expressed appreciation for NDMA’s significant technological advancements, especially highlighting the introduction of the Glacier Monitoring Portal, advanced seismic alert mechanisms, and effective public communication instruments to disseminate critical information in times of crisis. The delegation also underscored the immediate need for developing a robust federal policy framework to support Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) and District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs). Additionally, they advocated for the creation of a dedicated Special Resilience Fund and encouraged leveraging the resources and expertise of the Pakistani diaspora in disaster response efforts.
NDMA officials presented several actionable recommendations, stressing the vital importance of parliamentary support towards Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) control measures, establishment of a national resilience financing model, and superior integration among federal, provincial, and community-level governance structures to enhance disaster preparedness and response.
The visit concluded with a strong commitment from the lawmakers to continue empowering NDMA and reinforcing the national infrastructure and mechanisms necessary for resilience against climate-induced disasters.
