UNICEF and the Health Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are working together to provide critical nutrition services in Swat, a district severely affected by recent floods. With the support of the Embassy of Sweden in Pakistan, multiple nutrition sites have been set up to help children, mothers, and adolescent girls in need.
These centers offer screening and treatment for children suffering from severe acute malnutrition, including the provision of ready-to-use therapeutic food. Pregnant and breastfeeding women receive multiple micronutrient supplements to improve maternal nutrition. Adolescent girls are provided with iron and folic acid tablets to help prevent anemia.
In addition to nutritional support, the centers conduct counseling sessions on breastfeeding, complementary feeding, immunization, sanitation, and hygiene. Cooking demonstrations are also held to encourage healthy and age-appropriate feeding practices for young children.
Lady Health Workers and Community Engagement Workers are playing an essential role by conducting door-to-door visits to raise community awareness, promote healthy family care practices, and make necessary referrals. These combined efforts aim to ensure that families and children affected by the floods have timely access to the nutrition and health support they urgently need.
