OpenAI has introduced GPT-OSS, a new set of open-weight artificial intelligence models designed to empower developers with enhanced reasoning abilities and agent-based functionalities. This release marks a significant step for the AI community, as it provides powerful models that can be freely used and customized without the restrictions associated with closed-weight AI systems.

The GPT-OSS line features two mixture-of-experts (MoE) models: gpt-oss-120b, with 117 billion parameters, and gpt-oss-20b, featuring 21 billion parameters. Both models leverage 4-bit MXFP4 quantization technology, which significantly accelerates inference while minimizing computational resource requirements. This innovation allows the larger 120 billion parameter model to operate on a single H100 GPU, while the 20 billion parameter version can run comfortably on consumer-grade devices with 16GB of memory, making advanced AI accessible for a wide range of applications, including edge and consumer devices.

Developers can use GPT-OSS for complex tasks that require advanced reasoning, as well as for building autonomous agents, all while benefiting from the flexibility of open-weight licensing. This launch opens new possibilities for innovation in both commercial and personal AI projects, and positions OpenAI as a leader in promoting open access while maintaining state-of-the-art performance.
